What is hemp fiber?

Hemp, also known as hemp, is one of the earliest fibers used in cutting and cultivation in the world. It can be decomposed naturally, so Hemp fiber is an environmentally friendly textile raw material. There are two categories of Chinese cannabis: early maturing and late maturing. Early-maturing varieties have good fiber quality, while late-maturing varieties have coarse and hard fibers.

Hemp is the toughest fiber on earth. The single fiber length of hemp fiber is 15—25 mm, and the fineness is 15-30 microns, specific gravity 1:48. Both ends are obtuse-angled, the molecular structure is tightly arranged longitudinally, and the crystallinity and orientation are high. Among hemp fibers, the specific gravity is lighter than flax and ramie, and the fineness is smaller than ramie.

Characteristics of hemp fiber

(1) Hemp fiber is the softest and softest among all kinds of hemp fibers , the fineness is only one-third of ramie, which is equivalent to cotton fiber. The top of the fiber is blunt and round, without the sharp top of ramie and linen. Therefore, the finished product is particularly soft and suitable for the body, without the itchy feeling of linen and ramie clothing.

(2) The elongated cavity in the center of the hemp fiber is adjacent to the many cracks and small holes distributed longitudinally on the surface of the fiber. , forming an excellent capillary effect, so it is good at perspiration and moisture absorption. According to calculations, compared with cotton fabrics, the human body feels about 5℃ lower when wearing hemp clothing.

(3) The cross-section of hemp fiber is more complex than ramie, flax, cotton, and wool, with an irregular triangle, six It has an edge shape, an oblate shape, a waist shape, etc. The middle cavity is different from the outer shape. Its molecular structure is polygonal, loose and has spiral patterns. Therefore, hemp fiber has a good dissipation effect on sound waves and light waves, and can block strong ultraviolet radiation without special treatment. According to tests, general hemp can block more than 95% of ultraviolet rays without special treatment.

(4) Cannabis is a poor conductor and can avoid the accumulation of static electricity. The resistance to electrical breakdown is about 30%-90% higher than that of cotton fiber. It is a good insulating material. Since hemp fiber has particularly good hygroscopicity, hemp products exposed to the air generally contain about 12% water, and the air humidity reaches 95%. The water content can reach 30%, but it does not feel wet to the touch. Therefore, static electricity accumulation and friction-induced discharge and pilling can be easily avoided.

(5) Hemp fiber has high heat resistance and can be used at 370’C without discoloration. It is suitable for all types of fabrics .

(6) Anti-fungal and sterilizing. The oxygen contained in hemp fiber makes it impossible for anaerobic bacteria to survive and is effective against Staphylococcus aureus. , Pseudomonas aeruginosa, coccus albicans, Trichophyton gypseum, Penicillium and Aspergillus, etc. It has obvious killing effect. Hemp does not require any chemical pesticides and insecticides. Cannabis shoes can prevent athlete’s foot and is a standard green product.

Spinning properties of hemp fiber

Hemp single fiber length is too short, so it is not suitable for single fiber spinning , fiber bundles must be used for spinning, so the full degumming process similar to ramie cannot be used, and only the moderate degumming process similar to flax and jute can be used. Moderate degumming is to retain the glue layer that binds single fibers, and to remove the pectin-like substances between fiber bundles and all non-fiber substances outside the fiber bundles, so as to prepare fiber bundles suitable for spinning needs.

Spinning can be done in two ways: dry spinning and wet spinning. The dry spinning process has strict requirements on the length and fineness of the fiber bundles. Since the length of hemp single fibers is relatively short, in order to ensure the length of the fiber bundles, more single fibers are required to be crossed and pressed, resulting in thicker fibers and is only suitable for pure spinning of coarse yarns. This is consistent with the fact that dry spinning of jute and linen can only spin coarse yarns.

Wet spinning process can improve the quality of yarn. The principle is that during the wet spinning process of fine yarn, the fiber bundles in the roving Under the action of water and chemical additives, substances such as pectin soften and swell, greatly weakening the binding force between fibers. Under the condition that the drafting force of the spun yarn is greater than the bonding force between fibers, the fiber bundles are further split into small fiber bundles, thereby improving the spinnability of the fiber and increasing the spinning fineness.

During the spinning process, fiber bundles continue to separate, the fineness increases, and the short linen content increases. Excessive short linen content not only increases the difficulty of spinning, but also seriously affects the quality of the finished yarn, so it must be strict. Control the content of short fiber bundles. Longer fiber bundles with more gum content produce less short fiber bundles during spinning, so degumming before spinning must follow the principle of light degumming to obtain longer fiber bundles.

When using the wet spinning process, the key to improving the spinning fineness is to increase the softening of the pectin in the roving. Dissolution greatly reduces the bonding between fibers, thereby effectively improving the splitting effect.

Breaking strength of hemp fabrics Higher, slightly lower than ramie and about 1 times higher than cotton. Hemp fabrics are originally white and shiny, but due to different retting and peeling methods and semi-degummed fiber bundles, the color varies greatly. Its appearance is light gray with light yellow, some with light brown, and some with regular texture. Sulfur smoke white ones.
